Some of the most searched Umrah questions in America come from women, and they are often answered badly, or not at all. Here are respectful, practical answers to the questions we hear most, with the standing advice that your own scholar’s guidance comes first.
Can a woman perform Umrah without a mahram?
Yes. Saudi Arabia officially lifted the mahram requirement, and women, including women travelling alone, now perform Umrah in their thousands every month. A woman can obtain the visa, book the trip, and complete every rite without a male guardian accompanying her.
Two honest notes. First, some scholars continue to encourage travelling with a mahram or a trusted group as the preferred path, that is a religious discussion to have with your own scholar. Second, practically, many solo women travellers choose a guided group departure for companionship and ease, our groups always include women travelling without family, and our guides look after them attentively.
What does a woman wear in ihram?
A woman’s ihram is simply modest, ordinary clothing, there is no prescribed colour or garment. Most women choose loose, comfortable clothes, often an abaya, with a head covering. The classical rulings mention that the face covering and gloves are not worn in ihram, an area where schools differ in detail, so ask your scholar if this affects you. Comfortable, well broken in footwear matters more than most women expect, the packing checklist has a full list.
What if my period arrives during the trip?
This worries many women needlessly, the fiqh is well established and the trip is not ruined:
- A menstruating woman enters ihram normally and makes her intention, menstruation does not prevent ihram.
- She delays tawaf (and the prayer and sa’i that follow it) until she is pure, and simply completes her Umrah then. Days in between can be filled with dhikr, du’a and the ordinary blessings of the two cities.
- Some women, after speaking with a doctor and a scholar, use medication to delay the cycle for the travel window. It is permissible in the view of many scholars, but it is a personal medical decision, never a requirement.

Praying in the Haramain as a woman
Both sanctuaries have dedicated, well organised women’s prayer areas. In Madinah, visiting the Rawdah is arranged through women’s sessions on the Nusuk app, see our guides to booking a Rawdah appointment and adding children to the booking, since young children usually accompany their mothers.
The rites themselves
The rites of Umrah are identical for women, tawaf, the two rak’ahs, sa’i, with small differences of practice: women do not run in the brisk walking portions, they do not raise their voices with the talbiyah, and at the end they trim a fingertip’s length of hair rather than shaving. The full sequence is in our step by step guide.
Travel with people who plan for this
