Bringing Zamzam home for family and neighbours is one of the sweetest parts of returning from Umrah. It is also governed by a few strict rules, and every season pilgrims lose bottles at check in for avoidable reasons. Here is how to do it properly.

Where to buy Zamzam for the flight home

The right product is the official sealed 5 litre Zamzam container, produced under the authorised Zamzam project and sold:

  • At the airports, Jeddah (King Abdulaziz International) and Madinah (Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz) both have Zamzam sales points and vending near the departure areas, buy it on your way out, already sealed and flight ready.
  • At authorised outlets in the cities, including points around the central areas of Makkah and Madinah, if you prefer to sort it the day before.

It is inexpensive, typically in the range of ten to fifteen riyals for the sealed 5 litre pack, only a few US dollars. Confirm the day’s price at the counter.

Airline rules for US bound flights

  • Zamzam travels as checked baggage, never carry on. A 5 litre container is far beyond the cabin liquid limit, security will not let it through.
  • Most airlines flying out of Saudi Arabia accept one official sealed 5 litre container per passenger, either free alongside your allowance or as a declared special item. Saudia is famously accommodating; US and European carriers vary in how they count it against your baggage allowance.
  • The seal is the rule. Airlines accept the official sealed packaging because it is leak tested. Loose bottles filled by hand, taped jerry cans, or opened packs are routinely refused.
  • Confirm with your airline before you fly. One short question at booking, “do you accept one sealed 5L Zamzam per passenger on this route?”, removes all doubt. We confirm this for our pilgrims as part of the flight arrangements.

US customs

Bringing a personal quantity of Zamzam into the United States is fine, it is simply bottled water for personal use. Declare food and agricultural items as usual on your arrival form; a sealed water container raises no issue.

Packing tips that save heartbreak

  1. Keep the container in its official box, and let the airline tag it as its own piece if they offer.
  2. Do not decant Zamzam into your suitcase bottles, one crushed cap can soak everything you own.
  3. If you want small gift bottles for friends, buy little empty bottles at home and fill them from your sealed container after you arrive, not before.

And while you are still in the holy cities, drink your fill at the source, our guide to Zamzam in Masjid an-Nabawi shows where to find it in Madinah. Flights, baggage, and every small logistic like this are exactly what we handle in our packages, ask us anything.
